Cannabinoids are natural compounds found in the hemp plant. The two most well-known are THC and CBD. While hemp typically contains higher levels of CBD, the small amount of THC it does produce can be extracted and concentrated into compounds like Delta 8, Delta 9, and THCA. These cannabinoids are then used to create a wide range of hemp-infused products.
Under the 2018 Farm Bill, cannabinoids derived from hemp are federally legal as long as they contain no more than 0.3% Delta 9 THC by dry weight. Cannabinoids extracted from cannabis plants that exceed this limit are classified as marijuana and remain federally restricted. To be considered legal hemp, a cannabinoid must be sourced from hemp and stay within the 0.3% Delta 9 THC threshold.
While some cannabinoids like CBD are non-psychoactive and won’t get you high, many others can produce mind-altering effects. The type of high depends on the specific cannabinoid and product used. Each cannabinoid interacts uniquely with the body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS), and even slight differences in their molecular structure can lead to different effects and experiences.
