THCA itself is non-intoxicating — but when you heat it, it converts to delta-9 THC. To estimate the potency you’ll actually experience, multiply the THCA number by 0.877 and add any delta-9 already present. A jar labeled 25% THCA works out to roughly 22% total THC once heated. Higher isn’t automatically better — and a suspiciously high number is a reason to read the lab report, not to celebrate.

What the THCA number actually measures
THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the dominant cannabinoid in raw hemp flower. In its raw form it doesn’t produce a high — the molecule carries an extra carboxyl group that keeps it from binding effectively to CB1 receptors. So “27% THCA” means: 27% of this flower’s dry weight is a compound that becomes THC when you light, vape, or bake it. That’s why compliant hemp flower can be genuinely potent — the federal hemp definition is based on delta-9 THC content (no more than 0.3% on a dry-weight basis), which raw THCA flower can meet while still carrying a high THCA number.
The 0.877 rule: turning THCA% into total THC
Decarboxylation isn’t one-for-one. THCA is a heavier molecule than THC, so when it converts, it loses about 12.3% of its mass. The standard formula labs use:
Total THC = delta-9 THC% + (THCA% × 0.877)
Worked examples:
- Label says 20% THCA, 0.1% delta-9 → 0.1 + (20 × 0.877) = ~17.6% total THC
- Label says 25% THCA, 0.2% delta-9 → 0.2 + (25 × 0.877) = ~22.1% total THC
- Label says 30% THCA → ~26.3% total THC — genuinely top-shelf territory, and rare
That conversion assumes complete, perfect decarboxylation, which real-world smoking and vaping never quite achieve — so treat total THC as a ceiling, not a guarantee.
What counts as a high THCA percentage?
For flower, a rough field guide:
- Under 15% THCA — mild; often smoother for newer consumers
- 15-20% — solid mid-range; most everyday flower lives here
- 20-27% — strong; where well-grown boutique indoor flower typically lands
- Above 27% — exceptional and uncommon; verify it on the lab report
Two honesty notes. First, numbers keep creeping up across the industry because potency sells, and some labs are known to flatter their clients — if a bargain-priced flower claims 35% THCA, skepticism is the right response. Second, percentage varies batch to batch even within one strain, because it’s a function of the grow, not the name on the jar. How to read the COA in 30 seconds
- Find the cannabinoid table. Look for THCA% and delta-9 THC% by dry weight. Run the 0.877 math if the lab hasn’t printed “Total THC” for you.
- Check the delta-9 line. For compliant hemp flower it should be at or below 0.3%.
- Match the batch. The COA should reference a batch/lot consistent with what you’re buying — a two-year-old report on a fresh product is a red flag anywhere you shop.
- Skim the rest. Good COAs also cover things like moisture and, for concentrates, residual solvents.
Why percentage isn’t the whole story
Chasing the single biggest number is the most common flower-buying mistake. Three things matter as much or more:
- Terpenes. The aromatic compounds shape the character of the experience — the difference between an energetic sativa afternoon and a couch-locked indica evening is largely terpene-driven, not THC-driven. A 22% jar that smells loud will beat a 28% jar that smells like hay.

Is 20% THCA strong?
Yes — roughly 17-18% total THC once heated, which is solidly potent flower. Most experienced consumers are well served anywhere in the 18-25% THCA range.
Why does my “high THCA” flower show almost no THC on the label?
Because it hasn’t been heated yet. Raw flower stores its potency as THCA; the low delta-9 number is what makes it hemp under federal law. The conversion happens when you consume it.
Can two labs give the same flower different percentages?
Yes — sampling location, method, and lab practices all move the number a few points. That’s normal. Order-of-magnitude gaps, or numbers that never vary batch to batch, are the suspicious pattern.
Does a higher THCA percentage mean a better high?
